::draws to halt a few paces away from the main entrance to Starfleet's hub, cocking head to take in building...and remember last occasion for visiting::

::tamps down glare of disgusted indignation with profound effort, tugging at uniform jacket one last time before heading in::

::winces as irony of gesture strikes::

I don't see why we couldn't do this over dinner as well. God knows, I need the comfort food.

Half right.

The Aventine's transwarp engine was experimental and the design has been heavily modified since your day. What Titan will be carrying is far more advanced, and designed for more frequent use otherwise there's no way in hell I'd be going to the Delta Quadrant.

::offers admiralparis a pointed look::

Which is why I hope I have a qualified chief aboard.

As I said, Captain...

::taps stylus on table::

Starfleet isn't in the habit of sending it's most valued troublesome officers out into the unknown with weak spokes in the wheel. What happens after the fact is entirely out of our hands.

::swings gaze to Trill, staring her down::

Oh, not to worry, Admiral. I'm old sea salt, remember. And I'm sure I'll pick up a little pepper along the way as well.

::clasps hands on table, putting the most profound interest in voice::

So. I get the how of the mission...I'm just a little hazy on the why.

Apparently, it's part family reunion.

::looks at dee_troi again when she coughs into hand::

Only partly, Captain. I believe most of yours will already be with you at launch.

::lifts corner of mouth in smile when future captain twists to face, rewarded by a surprised blink::

::satisfied that attention is focused on person and not connection, enlightens him::

Titan's original mission was to take her to the Beta Quadrant, if I recall. Any greater distance was out of the question only because of technological limitations. Now that transwarp has been vastly improved, it is only logical that Starfleet branch out even further...to the Delta Quadrant.

It follows that while a rendezvous with Voyager is not guaranteed, the odds are no longer nonexistent. With the potential for such contact, it makes little sense to deprive her crew of whatever personal contact is possible.

::narrows eyes...the only thing more worrying than a rigid Vulcan is one who flirts with human personality...there's just no telling what they're up to::

::splays hands on table, picturing imaginary cards::

Little sense, maybe, but not nonexistent sense, Lieutenant. Voyager has well over a hundred crew members native to this quadrant aboard. I'm assuming Titan isn't packing a relative aboard for every one of them...

::looks to Paris for affirmation, just in case::

Tell me, what logic makes you special?

::finally decides to break silence, leaning forward to look down table::

Medical logic, Captain. Voyager may well have over a hundred people missing home, but only one of them requires a very specific treatment.

Her former security officer...Asil's father...suffers from a neurological disorder that can only be remedied by mind meld with another trained Vulcan...preferably a family member.

::glances to lt_asil, offering silent apology for laying family secrets out for public perusal::

According to reports, Tuvok's condition is only deteriorating. His contributions to Starfleet have been incalculable, and his memories and perspective should be preserved if at all possible.

I'd rather you had stuck with 'she misses him'.

::squints again...who is she, anyhow?::

::shakes badgering curiosity off, settling focus on the Vulcan instead::

Don't get me wrong, Lieutenant, I'm certain you're capable and qualified. I just don't know what bull Command has been feeding you need to make certain you understand your position. There is no guarantee we'll encounter Voyager. Last time I checked, the Delta Quadrant is a big place, and she's still further in than Titan will be aiming for.

I need a functioning and focused security head, not a distracted stowaway.

::lifts brow::

Captain, let me assure you...even in my worst moments of emotional lapse, my focus is above and beyond that I have seen in anyone else present today.

::allows a moment of due offense for rest of room...most of rest of room...admiralparis is, oddly enough, smiling::

::eventually lifts corner of mouth again in gesture of peace::

...I believe my father's unique humor is also an invaluable trait to be preserved.
