::shifts kelsie_wildman in arms, tilting sensitive ear back away from high pitched squeal of rage::

Aw, come on, don't be fussy...Naomi, come on and get her, I told Vorik I'd be in engineering ten minutes ago!

::jumps at resounding crash from bathroom, before sighing with relief...at least it surprised the screamer into silence::

::holds own breath when door slides open to reveal what looks like a very mad human-Ktarian::

Everything will be fine.

...if you feel that bad, maybe you should go to sickbay...

Or pout it out.

::jumps again when outer door chimes::

Oh, come on in!

::passes between kes_ and linnis_paris, carefully observing work::

::automatically steps back when the half-Ocampan offers a particularly intimidating glare, twisting to resume own efforts::

I don't know why they have to be nervous. The survival of an organic during a ship battle is far more likely than that of a non-redundant hologram...and assuming all goes well, I will be the only soul likely left to rot in some researcher's drawer back in the Alpha Quadrant.

::chances another look back, finally losing patience::

Good heavens, we haven't even enough to inoculate a third of the crew. Your attention to detail is admirable, Doctor, but do trust your abilities enough to proceed with less nit-picking just this once.

::turns to stare at old friend when younger Ocampan's hand wobbles on vial, pre-empting whatever well-deserved, scathing remark she might marshal::

Enough, Doctor.

Since you'll neither benefit or suffer harm from the inoculations, perhaps you could leave the work to those who might.

::stares in surprise::

::after taking a moment to consider statement, recognizes potential for insult::

::modulates voice to more pleasant, conciliatory tenor, circling table to force coworker's attention::

I apologize, Linnis. It wasn't my intention to imply inadequacy on your part...quite the opposite.

::slams lid down on vial with maybe just a little more force than necessary, keeping own eyes down and voice tight::

It's all right. You're stressed, we all are.

Just...let me think.

As long as you don't take too long.

::smiles, attempting to show jest::

...

::sighs::

At any rate, assuming we all survive this, you have my permission to delete my program once and for all before Voyager skips off home. In fact, I beg you to.

Don't be ridiculous.

I'll hide you in my boot and take you home to do the cooking.

Wherever home might eventually be...

::frowns at own confusion over possible future::

::shakes it off, turning attention to next vial::

Let's just make it through today, okay?

Very well, though it's almost tomorrow, actually...

::trails off, catching sight of newcomer and sharing a look with kes_ over linnis_paris' head::

Ah, Miss Paris, how might we assist you?

::sighs...after sighting linnis_paris, was just going to discreetly slip into the office and sit...but no such luck::

::squares shoulders::

Ensign Jenkins was called to her station in the middle of our class. She said we should come here...

::shrugs apologetically at kes_::

I tried to get Jenay to come.

::smiles to gently urge her in, sliding hand over to rest on linnis_paris arm when she stiffens::

She'll be fine. When the noise gets to be too much we'll see her.

::exchanges another look with Voyager's CMO::

If you had other work to complete I'm certain the Doctor wouldn't mind you using his station.

I'd rather do something useful, if you don't mind...

::offers a very strained smile::

This is complex work. You don't have the training.

I learn fast. Really fast if I try. It's the Ocampan in me.

::folds hands on stomach, suppressing impatience at dismissal...knowing the reasons behind linnis_paris' distance and brusqueness don't make them easier to bear::

Being Ocampan doesn't exempt you from being young and in need of practice before you risk the well-being of others. I was here three months before I was allowed to give a hypo.

::nods toward office::

Go do your work. I'll look at it in a while.

If you don't want to be anything resembling my mother, don't try to tell me what to do.

Renara.

Please, you'll be safer here.

::releases slight sigh of relief when, after a moment of clear internal debate, she heads for office, head up and back ramrod straight::

::that battle won, turns to look at linnis_paris again, refusing to bow to unreasonably strong protective instinct her forlorn expression stirs::

That was unfair. She's been nothing but good and honest and respectful, it's time you accepted her for what she is and not what you've lost.
