::shifts kelsie_wildman in arms, tilting sensitive ear back away from high pitched squeal of rage::
Aw, come on, don't be fussy...Naomi, come on and get her, I told Vorik I'd be in engineering ten minutes ago!
::jumps at resounding crash from bathroom, before sighing with relief...at least it surprised the screamer into silence::
::holds own breath when door slides open to reveal what looks like a very mad human-Ktarian::
Everything will be fine.
...if you feel that bad, maybe you should go to sickbay...
Or pout it out.
::jumps again when outer door chimes::
Oh, come on in!
Don't be ridiculous.
I'll hide you in my boot and take you home to do the cooking.
Wherever home might eventually be...
::frowns at own confusion over possible future::
::shakes it off, turning attention to next vial::
Let's just make it through today, okay?
Very well, though it's almost tomorrow, actually...
::trails off, catching sight of newcomer and sharing a look with kes_
Ah, Miss Paris, how might we assist you?
::sighs...after sighting linnis_paris
, was just going to discreetly slip into the office and sit...but no such luck::
Ensign Jenkins was called to her station in the middle of our class. She said we should come here...
::shrugs apologetically at kes_
I tried to get Jenay to come.

::smiles to gently urge her in, sliding hand over to rest on linnis_paris
arm when she stiffens::
She'll be fine. When the noise gets to be too much we'll see her.
::exchanges another look with Voyager
If you had other work to complete I'm certain the Doctor wouldn't mind you using his station.
I'd rather do something useful, if you don't mind...
::inches closer, eyes drawn to work spread out::
::shakes off restraining hand, glancing up::
::offers a very strained smile::
This is complex work. You don't have the training.
I learn fast. Really fast if I try. It's the Ocampan in me.
::folds hands on stomach, suppressing impatience at dismissal...knowing the reasons behind linnis_paris
' distance and brusqueness don't make them easier to bear::
Being Ocampan doesn't exempt you from being young and in need of practice before you risk the well-being of others. I was here three months before I was allowed to give a hypo.
::nods toward office::
Go do your work. I'll look at it in a while.
::balls fists, struggling to retain hard won dignity::
If you don't want to be anything resembling my mother, don't try to tell me what to do.
2010-03-13 03:56 am (UTC)
Please, you'll be safer here.
::releases slight sigh of relief when, after a moment of clear internal debate, she heads for office, head up and back ramrod straight::
::that battle won, turns to look at linnis_paris
again, refusing to bow to unreasonably strong protective instinct her forlorn expression stirs::
That was unfair. She's been nothing but good and honest and respectful, it's time you accepted her for what she is and not what you've lost.
What I left behind, you mean?
::caps another vial::
Look. She has a mother. I don't think it would really be fair of me to start monopolizing attention in some pitiful attempt to fill my void.
She was momentarily angry and lashed out with the one thing she thought might hurt me, nothing more.
It may have worked, but it doesn't change the fact that this isn't playtime and she isn't qualified to help.

That's very perceptive, but the fact that you can recognize the motive behind someone else's actions doesn't mean you're capable of acknowledging your own.
I don't believe she's in search of a mother, just understanding, but you wouldn't know that...you've avoided her since the day you were made aware of her presence. You try to protect yourself too well, Linnis. I don't expect that to change today, but you might look beyond your own feelings.
This may be your last opportunity to reconcile.
Thank you for the reminder.
That's just assuming everything goes wrong.
If things go right, you know what? I'll probably have plenty of chances. She's filled out an Academy application. If it's accepted...and there's no reason it wouldn't be...she'll be in San Francisco during school and Admiral Paris has already agreed to take her in during off times.
She's going to be working toward a dual degree in probability mechanics and exobiology.
::turns, looking through clear glass into office::
I know everything there is to know about that young woman, and I also know that my daughter wanted nothing more than to be a pilot.
2010-03-14 01:41 am (UTC)
::smiles at quaint and nearly pejorative description of mirror_renara
, not a little amused...she might not see it, but at times linnis_paris
is still more a young soul than mature one herself::
She can still be a pilot. I understand they come from many backgrounds.
Your father majored in astrophysics.
And I think those few years permanently crippled his mind.
::shakes own head, a ripple of humor rising despite annoyance and stress::
::looks from Ocampan to hologram, taking in their worried expectant looks::
Why don't we just get back to work?
